About the Campaign

Hi, my name's Anthony; in the blogosphere I sometimes go by the name Drance. I've returned to the table-top roleplaying hobby within the last few years. Since my return, I've played in and run several campaigns. If you're interested, you can visit my gaming blog, Once More Unto the Breach, to read more about my experiences on my journey of roleplaying rediscovery.

Beyond the Westwall started as my second attempt to use the Labyrinth Lord rule set, a retroclone of the Moldvay/Cook/Marsh Basic/Expert sets from the early 1980's. Until my current return to roleplaying, I'd never played Basic D&D in either its original or clone forms. I've always played some variation of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I thought it was about time to remedy the situation.

This campaign uses the Points of Light and Blackmarsh settings created by Robert Conley.

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG Rules

I am now using the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG for the campaign, also known as DCC RPG. This excellent rule set, created by Goodman Games, combines old-school roleplaying sensibilities with new twists on the D&D systems that came before it.

Labyrinth Lord Rules and House Rules

I initially used the Labyrinth Lord rules system created by Dan Proctor, available via the Goblinoid Games website. You can obtain a free non-art version of the rules here, but I recommend getting the well-made hard copy of the game. In addition, my supplemental house rules for use with Labyrinth Lord can be found here.

Other Campaign Considerations

Beyond the Westwall is a campaign geared toward the so-called "old-school" style of roleplaying. For a great discussion of what it means to game in an old-school style, go here to obtain the Quick Primer for Old School Gaming by Matt Finch (creator of another retroclone called Swords & Wizardry).
